Top ten internet business tips



To do well on the internet you have to be unique and to do really well you have to be the best! A wise man oneces said "it doesn't matter what you do as long as you are the best at it".
Please note these are general tips and do not include things like meta tags and PROMOTION which you will find on other pages
1)When doing something complicated which you want in one of your pages, make it in a new file then just copy it into your page, this makes it lot easier. For example if you are making a very complicated table then make the "table" to /table on a new page with something like aaaa aaaa aaaa etc. in each of the "cells"

2)Don't offend your visitors !!
I have seen so many sites that say "I have had loads of requests for X personally i think x is crap but if you want x click here!"
This is not advised! You would have just annoyed all those visitors that requested x.

3)Find out what works for you. When you buy a "promotion" book you are buying secondary data, the information you are buying may well be worth $100s of dollars to the author but it is unlikely to be worth this much to you.

4)Don't spend more than you can afford. It sounds obvious but som many people spend tons of money forgetting that advertisng can make a loss very easily. When buying advertising do not confuse hits / visits with vistors!. The less you spend the easier it is to make profit! Of course if you see something for sale that is $10 and you know you can sell each for $15 got for it.

5)Don't do what the best say is good do as they do! Why pay $200 + postage for marketing book which is out of date as soon as it has been published and the author would not tell you all their "secrets" anyway! They want to sell the book but they don't want to have 1000's of high quality competitors.

6)Basically don't spend money on ammasing deals!
Ok you have seen an ammasing deal; xx,000 banner impressions for $50. You have seen the same thing selling for $200 an thoughht you would really like it but could not afford it. You can afford it know so why not? Well are you going to make over $50 profit from the banner impressions remembering that the average ratio is under 1/2% ! I don't just mean referal programs, it is the same with all "real" business. A business will only exist if it thinks it can make a profit. Banner exchanges most typically work on a 2:1 ratio so lets say they have 2 million displays a day that mean they get 1 million a day profit!

7)Only join a program you understand :)
For Example you have seen a banner exchange which offers a 1:1 exposer ratio and you get 3000 exposers for joining. Great. Well not really, how is this working if it is a 1:1 ratio that would mean that all the banner exposers from members sites are being used on other members sites. So for 1 they are lying or not very cleaver and 2 they will close down soon!

7.5)Anaylise your posision
In todays competitve markets it is not enough to carry on doing what haas been suacess full for you in the past you must constanly analyse your products / sites to find out wahat workss for you!

8)Don't make other people rich! Become self sufficient. This does not mean you have to be able to do everything your self it means you need to be able to do enough to not have to really on other companies. So you have your own banner rotation, mailing list, and stats. Most of these mean cgi but don't worry you don't have to learn cgi just be able to edit it. With quite a few sites know offering free cgi with step by step instructions this is not very difficult. If you are not allowed cgi on your host get an account with a free host that offers this service. remember though that in there terms and conditions they will not let you just use the account for storage but you can get round this by just putting one page on the server then you get cgi and they (probably) get banner impressions.

9)look at your site on different levels with different browsers
Firstly install the latest version of both Internet explorer and netscape on your computer. Before you upload a new design make sure it is compatible with older browsers, preferably by looking at with one. A check with website garage may well tell you that a certain tag is not compatible with a certain browser but will not tell you what it will do!
Another thing you should check it screen resolution compatablity. You can do this just by changing the resalution on your monitor

9.5)Be honest!
Is your site really that good! I know this one is not ammasing but I enjoy it and it makes a bit of money, so even though it is not the best (yet!)I can live with that.

10)Refreall is not a god send !! There is no such thing as a win win situation.
N.B referal programs make the company rich not the site! Or do they? Think about it, you are offered 5-15% for each sale. So that means that the company that made this "offer" to the internet community gets 85%. So who is doing better?
Well, firstly not all programs only pay 5-15%. Secondly many programs improve your site, or atleast add to it. For many sites, especially new ones, this is very improtant.
If you have a site about cars don't join a flowers referal program! Join a cars referal program, if you are looking for smaller products, meaning more sales, more frequent income) then you could sell car assories, completry goods.
Referal programs are very good, but they require input buy you. Unlike banner advertisers like burstmedia you have to do everything. You have to find the program.
Many banner networks just join referal programs, and then just pay you 50-80% of what they get. Surely that means you should go direct? Not nessorcerily, the big companies get paid a lot more CPM then you can get on you own, so even after their commission you can oftern get higher rates.
The bottom line is that you have to do research on your own site, try own different banner networks and referal programs. Rember that banners have low CTR's and networks tend to stick with these rather than using searh boxes etc. One happy exception to this rule is cj.com
